Improved maternal health remains a major priority for the United Nations in general and the World Health Organization in particular, both of which have prioritised it in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDO). Surprisingly, physiological rather than psychosocial deaths are more commonly cited as causes of complications during childbirth and pregnancy, whereas in our least developed countries, where maternal mortality is high, cultural and psychological issues expose women to unwanted pregnancies and psychic traumas that manifest themselves during parturition in the form of complications. As a result of eclampsia, haemorrhage, and work defects, the woman and her baby are at risk of death. In this paper, we propose a protocol for assisting childbirth that is based on the therapeutic practises of our African cultures.
