Calghatgi's discovery that three popular antibiotics (Abs) enhanced mitochondrial reactive oxygen (ROS) and lipid peroxide (LP) while depleting their natural absorbant glutathione prompted me to look into the potential carcinogenic effects of these genotoxic chemicals. Antibiotics had a wide spectrum of effects on mitochondria and cellular DNA, all of which were consistent with previous contributions to carcinogenesis. HCC, RCC (KCC), CRC, and esophageal cancers were all likely to have grown as a result of these modifications. In this sense, LP-induced tumour suppressor gene alterations were remarkable, and mutations produced in CRC were consistent with those observed in carcinogenesi.
