Titanate Couplers for Dental Composites Construction | Chapter 13 | Highlights on Medicine and Medical Science Vol. 18

Silane coupling agent is a widely used coupler in dental applications to improve adhesion between the components of dental composites. Silica-based fillers are easily silanized due to their similar ordered structure. Silane, on the other hand, is hydrolytically destroyed in the aqueous oral environment and bonds inefficiently to non-silica fillers. As a result, improving hydrolytically stable dental composites is a critical priority in dental materials research. Titanate coupling agents (TCAs) improved interfacial bonding, homogenous filler dispersion, and mechanical properties in composites. Titanates are also more hydrolytically stable in damp environments. The addition of a little amount of titanates can improve the moisture resistance of composites. This chapter examines the impact of silane instability in moisture on the performance of dental composites and introduces TCAs as an alternative to silanes for dental composite construction.   Author (S) Details Nidal W.
