Investigating the Potential Beneficial Effects of Native Banana Starch on Glycemia and Insulin Resistance in Obese Non-Diabetic Women| Chapter 4 | Issues and Development in Health Research Vol. 2

  Several studies have found that changing one's lifestyle can help minimise the risk of diabetes. The goal of this study was to compare the effects of native banana starch (NBS) and metformin (MF) on glycemic management and insulin resistance in non-diabetic obese women. Banana is one of the most ancient crops in the world. It is the most appreciated fruit because of its multipurpose use as food. Being perishable, it deteriorates very quickly. Post-harvest treatment with various suitable chemicals like potassium permanganate, ethrel, dipping in hot water, cold water and use of polythene bags can be used for enhancing shelf-life. Post-harvest treatment of banana fingers with different concentrations of potassium permanganate, ethrel and dippings in hot and cold water and analysis of shelf-life of treated fruits through titratable acidity, ascorbic acid and TSS content of fruit has been carried out during storage. The analysis revealed superiority of ethrel 600 ppm and potassium permanganate as ethylene inhibitor and absorbent to improve storage life banana fruits without loss of nutrient content. Nitrogen (N) is needed for all growth processes, as it is the major component of amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins, enzymes and the green pigment chlorophyll. Chlorophyll converts sunlight energy into plant energy in the form of sugars and carbohydrates. The sub surface drip fertigation is a technique to apply both water and fertilizers through drip irrigation system during the recent years were shown to be very effective in achieving higher water and fertilizer use efficiencies. The nutrient mobility study revealed that fertigation treatments maintained higher concentration of available nitrogen around root zone of banana compared to surface irrigation with soil application of recommended dose of fertilizers where most of the nutrients moved to deeper layer due to leaching fraction of applied fertilizers. Bananas are grown in the world mainly for their economic and nutritional value. High perishable nature of banana leads to quality deterioration which distracts consumer and hence high postharvest losses in the market. Climacteric nature of banana make these postharvest losses accelerate by triggering ethylene induced ripening process. Extending banana shelf life could be a considerable commercial benefit for both exporters and retailers. Treatments such as fungicides, heat treatments and low temperature storage are being applied for extending the shelf life of banana.
