Investigating the Potential Beneficial Effects of Native Banana Starch on Glycemia and Insulin Resistance in Obese Non-Diabetic Women| Chapter 4 | Issues and Development in Health Research Vol. 2
Several studies have found that changing one's lifestyle can help minimise the risk of diabetes. The goal of this study was to compare the effects of native banana starch (NBS) and metformin (MF) on glycemic management and insulin resistance in non-diabetic obese women. HOMA- IR (ge)2.5 HOMA- IR (ge)2.5 HOMA- IR (ge)2.5 HOMA- IR (ge)2.5 HOMA- IR (ge)2.5 HOMA- IR (ge)2.5 HOMA- IR (ge)2.5 HOMA- IR ( One group took NBS 30g/day and the other MF 850 mg/day for an eight-week period. Four weeks of NBS or four weeks of MF treatment lowered fasting glycemia (week 0 vs week 4, p0.05). Fasting insulin and HOMA-IR readings fell gradually after NBS and MF treatments, attaining statistical significance. After eight weeks (week 0 versus week 8, p-0.05), there was a statistically significant difference (week 0 vs week 8). After eight weeks of NBS supplementation, the 30 and 60 minute insulin AUCs tended to be lower than the baseline 30 and 60 minute insulin AUCs. After four or eight weeks, there were no differences in HOMA-IR response between treatments. NBS supplementation has been shown to reduce fasting glucose and insulin resistance in a sample of obese women, suggesting that it could be a low-cost, easily available option for averting problems in the obese.
