Determination of Relationship among Macronutrient Intake and Overweight/Obesity in School Children from Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico| Chapter 10 | Issues and Development in Health Research Vol. 2
The goal of this study was to see if there was a link between macronutrient intake and overweight/obesity in kids in Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico.
In Celaya, Guanajuato, 225 school-aged youngsters (6 to 13 years) were
evaluated. Individual interviews with parents and children were undertaken to
obtain information on food consumption frequency using a validated
questionnaire (SNUT), from which the intake of macronutrients (carbohydrates,
proteins, and fats) and fat subtypes were calculated. To determine the
relationship between macronutrient intake and overweight/obesity in
schoolchildren, the Chi squared statistic and its accompanying p-value were
calculated.
In this group of schoolchildren from Celaya, Guanajuato, there is no link
between macronutrient intake (proteins, carbs, and fats) and
overweight/obesity. Carbohydrates (X2 = 3.47, P=.18); proteins (X2 = 3.36,
P=.19); and lipids (Z for two proportions) (P>.05.) were the macronutrients
associated with obesity.
Conclusion: Other significant factors, such as physical activity, may play a
role in the link between overweight/obesity and obesity.
