Maternal Serum Biochemical Indicators of Trophoblastic Cell and Endothelial Function at First Trimester of Pregnancy | Chapter 19 | New Frontiers in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 9

Background: Preeclampsia is a worldwide pregnancy complication, and one of the most important goals in obstetrics is to identify patients who are at an increased risk early. The exact cause of preeclampsia is unknown, but it is thought that a problem with early placentation is linked to the disorder's pathogenesis. With basal values of the biochemical markers related with the underlying placentation process, first trimester screening is critical over the second trimester for understanding the early beginning of the illness. The goal of this study is to determine the levels of serum biochemical markers in pregnant women during the first trimester, as well as the statistical significance and correlation of the data in support of trophoblastic cell integrity, endothelial function, and oxidative stress. Materials and Procedures: A longitudinal study was conducted on 86 pregnant women between the ages of 20 and 35 who were primigravidas with a singleton pregnancy and visited a prenatal checkup between 11 and 13 weeks of pregnancy. ELISA was used to test maternal serum for Placental protein 13 (PP13), Caspase 3, Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), and Nitric oxide (NO). The activity of xanthine oxidase (XO) was measured spectrophotometrically. A dry chemical analyser was used to quantify calcium and uric acid (UA). The mean SD values for mean arterial pressure (MAP) are 108.4 18.9, UA 2.01 0.85, TOS 12.83 5.17, TAC 24.10 14.28, XO 1.01 2.67, Caspase-3 1.76 2.22, PP13 489.77 53.6, Calcium 10.88 1.97, ADMA 19.03 17.08, and NO 1.16 0.75. Positive correlations were found between ADMA and Caspase-3 (r = +0.435), PP13 and NO (r = +0.241), TOS and TAC (r = +0.176), UA and ADMA (r = +0.176), UA and TAC (r = +0.168) while negative correlations were found between PP13 and ADMA (r = 0.158), NO & TOS (r = 0.114), UA & XO (r = 0.1 Conclusion: The study found that first trimester biochemical markers and their correlation predict trophoblastic cell integrity and endothelial function during placentation under oxidative stress, which could aid in identifying women who develop preeclampsia later on.

Study on Processing Method Influences the Effect of Cassava (Manihot esculenta) Consumption on Blood Lipid Profile in Rats | Chapter 8 | Current Research and Development in Chemistry Vol.1

Cassava is consumed in many tropical countries and is fast becoming the major raw material of many diets, especially in the bakery, brewery and pharmaceutical industries. In a study to determine the effects of various formulations of Cassava feeds on blood lipid profile in rats. Forty adult Wistar rats weighing between 120 and 150 g were divided into 4 groups of 10 rats each. The rats were acclimatized for one week; fed with different formulations of Cassava feeds adlibitum, after which the rats were allotted into groups. Group 1 was fed on Garri; group 2 on Cassava flour; group 3 on Tapioca, and the control group (group 4) on normal chow.  Traditional Medicine Practitioners (TMPs) of Côte d'Ivoire are familiar with the therapeutic herbs.
