Salivary Diagnostics in HIV Infection using Rapid Oral Fluid Detection Kit | Chapter 5 | New Frontiers in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 9

The terms human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) conjure up images of terror, social shame, pain, and, ultimately, death. The only way to know if you have HIV is to get a lab test. Blood is the most routinely utilised specimen for HIV testing. Plasma, serum, oral fluid, and urine are examples of other fluids that could be employed. Oral fluid has several advantages: it is safe to collect, the method is noninvasive and painless, infectious viruses in oral fluid are uncommon, making oral fluid samples more easily disposable, and a sufficient amount of oral fluid may be obtained. Rapid HIV testing based on oral fluid can be utilised instead of serum since the biological fluid can be studied for diagnostic purposes. Oraquick was an example of a diagnostic rapid detection kit for HIV infection. Rapid oral fluid testing is practical and can be utilised for surveillance as well as part of a diagnosis algorithm, according to a study done at Vinayaka Mission's Sankarachariyar dental college, within the limits applicable to routine tests used for antibody detection.
